Suspect a Water Leak? Here’s What to Do Before You Call Majestic Plumbing
We get it—realising you might have a water leak is never fun. Whether it’s a quiet drip behind a wall, a sky-high water bill, or a mysterious wet patch on the floor, the uncertainty can be frustrating. At Majestic Plumbing, we handle leak detection and repairs every day across Perth, and while we’re always ready to jump in, there are a few smart things you can check first.
Before you pick up the phone, here are some practical steps you can take to figure out what’s going on—and potentially save yourself time, money, and water.
1. Start with the Meter Check (Your First Line of Defence)
This one’s straight from the Water Corporation’s playbook and one of the easiest ways to tell if you’ve got a leak:
- First, turn off everything that uses water—taps, appliances, showers, garden hoses.
- Head out to your water meter (usually on the front verge).
- Jot down the numbers or snap a quick pic.
- Wait 15 to 30 minutes (no cheating—don’t run the tap!).
- Check the meter again.
If the numbers have changed, you’ve got a leak. It could be minor, it could be major—but something’s not right. Time to call us.
2. Play Detective Around the Property
Once you’ve done the meter test, take a slow walk around your home or business and keep your eyes—and ears—open. Some common signs include:
- Dripping taps or showerheads that won’t quite shut off
- Running toilets (bonus tip: drop some food dye in the cistern and see if it shows up in the bowl)
- Wet spots on walls, ceilings, or floors
- Damp smells, especially under sinks or around cabinetry
- Unusual sounds, like hissing behind walls or floors
3. Know What’s Yours (and What’s Not)
In WA, the water meter marks the divide between what you’re responsible for, and what the Water Corporation takes care of.
- If the leak is on your side of the meter (the house side), it’s your job—and we’re here to help.
- If it’s on the verge side (before the meter), give the Water Corp a call on 13 13 75.
Still not sure? Call us anyway—we’re happy to guide you through it.
4. Turn Off the Water (If Things Are Getting Messy)
If water is visibly leaking or flooding, don’t wait—shut off your water at the mains. It’s usually a tap or valve right near your water meter. This will stop any further damage while you wait for us to arrive.
Pro tip: If you’re not confident doing this, call our team and we’ll talk you through it over the phone. We’ve done this more times than we can count—no stress.
5. Take Photos and Make Notes
This might seem unnecessary, but it helps us big time. If you notice any visible signs of the leak (damp patches, water pooling, strange noises), snap a few photos and jot down:
- When the problem started
- Any changes in water pressure or flow
- Whether it’s constant or comes and goes
The more info we have, the faster we can zero in on the source.
Still Not Sure? That’s What We’re Here For.
